Dear reader I couldn’t sleep so I finished reading “Sky Without Stars” book #1 in the “System Divine” series by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell. I picked up this book in hardcover edition from my local Barnes and Noble because the synopsis of the book seemed interesting(a French Revolution like setting in futuristic space) and I had heard a few good things about it. My personal review of the book is as follows:
I really personally liked the setting/world building/and for the most part however the different character’s perspectives were done (I normally don’t like books with multiple character POVS) what personally pulled me out of the story/annoyed me was Chatine’s attitude and(in my personal opinion) almost “Insta-love” like feelings towards Marcellus, (by the way I would be very surprised if there isn’t a love triangle subplot/main romantic story arc in the next book in the series). Which I found as things progressed to be very(in my personal opinion) over the top and dramatic(especially given the setting in terms of what was going on with/around the characters/the stress they were under/ and the length of time they’ve known each other for)
The plot twists/reveals towards the end of the book that were (in my personal opinion) supposed to help give her character growth didn’t have any time in between them to make any impact on me as a reader and by the time it goes back to her it seemed to me personally as if she didn’t take them to heart.
I am interested in the other characters and what happens next with them I just don’t know if I’m personally interested enough to buy the next book as soon as it comes out.
Overall I personally rate this book a 5 and half out of 10 because of how much I liked the characters and world building.
