Dear reader I couldn’t sleep so I finished “Shadowscent” book number one in the “Shadowscent” series by P. M. Freestone. I picked up this book in hardcover edition from Barnes and Noble because synopsis seemed interesting, especially the parts about scents/perfume. My dad paid for it for me as part of my Christmas gifts(We went to the store after Christmas to spend one of my gift cards). My personal review of the book is as follows:
I personally found the setting(Overall), basic arc of the general plot, writing, and characters to be interesting and (for the most part) believable.
I definitely personally feel that a lot of the(for lack of a better way of phrasing it that doesn’t give away any spoilers) deeper plot mechanics especially when it comes to how everything works within the framework of the world of the book as a whole especially when it comes to the magical/fantasy elements(that might not technically be the best fit for what I’m trying to explain; again I’m trying to avoid spoilers) as well the political upheaval plotline felt like they were rushed in my personal opinion especially towards the end of novel; it felt to me personally as if the author was trying to fit in the information in the middle of the characters trying to finish the main quest of the book and I ended up personally wanting more of a deeper ending in terms of both things. I also found times where in my personal opinion it felt as if a character’s actions were only a plot device to move a certain character into certain necessary events/places which felt a bit too convenient for my personal tastes.
The overall vibe of the book reminded me personally a lot of the “Witchlands” series by Susan Dennard I think that if you liked that series you should check out this one. I also recommend checking out this book if you want to escape to a dessert fantasy world for a while.
I do want to read the next book in the series just to see what happens next with the characters. Overall I rate this book a 6 out of 10 because of how unique I found so many elements of the book as a whole.
